Happy birthday Jon Anderson (singer of Yes) (1944) – this is also the day that Nick Drake died in 1974.

Since I only like Yes WITH Jon Anderson, I’ll do Yes today!  I’ve bought a few editions of some Yes titles!

“The Yes” on an Italian LP, a 5.1 DVD-A of “Fragile”…I remember hearing them back around 1970 on the FM radio: “All Good People”, probably.  I bought “Fragile” as soon as it came out, and quickly lost interest – but why?  It is British progressive rock!  I guess I just didn’t need “Close To The Edge”; a discount store near here had the 3LP “Yessongs” for a really low price, so I got that one, when new, too.

“90125” was originally called “80143” or something like that, indicating it was a dollar less in retail price.  I also bought the SA-CD boxed set, when it was new (as that added a few titles to the short list of what was on SA-CD).

Yes “In A Word”

Happy birthday Mr. R&B Otis Redding (1941), Doug Ingle (of Iron Butterfly) (1945), actor Peter Sellers (1925), country singer Patsy Cline (1932), and singer Jose Feliciano (1945).

I really enjoy Otis Redding. I am a huge Iron Butterfly fan. I always enjoyed Peter Sellers. I bought a Patsy Cline SA-CD for $29.98. Thanks to Australian television (the ABC & “Rage Goes Retro”) I am more of a Jose Feliciano fan than ever before.

Yes “In A Word” (Rhino 5CD boxed set)

I probably stumbled across this title when it was too cheap somewhere, or when I had a 50% off coupon, and it was already too cheap. When new this must’ve retailed for over $50! I am sure I paid less than $20 for it.

Looks like there are 6 tracks that are indicated as “Previously Unissued” – so no idea if they are bonus tracks elsewhere – mostly from the latter 80’s period. The packaging is rather nice Roger Dean designs. The booklet is large, for a CD boxed set, has it’s own sleeve! Full of photos, and other neat Roger Dean designs.

We know these albums (the Atlantic Yes LP’s) can be made to sound sharp, as the Japanese made SA-CD’s of all of them. So, it sounds good, looks good – and appears to be ‘Steve Howe approved / mixed’. OK!

And I was rather sad at the death of Chris Squire. I mean, he played on virtually all Yes album – to that point, and his “sound” was distinctive.

I was never much of a fan of Rick Wakeman, but these days, I can appreciate his A&M years, and immediate post-A&M output (“I’m So Straight I’m A Weirdo”).

But the 5CD boxed set of Yes could keep pretty much anybody busy for quite an extended period of time, just flipping the discs through your CD changer sampling each track. This material is better than that, I have enjoyed Yes since approx. 1971 – after I first heard and enjoyed “The Yes Album” on FM radio.

Steve Howe

Happy birthday to guitarist Steve Howe (of Yes) (1947); Julian Lennon (1963); Jacques Brel (1929).

A while back, I actually bought the Japanese Yes SA-CD boxed set, with all of their Atlantic Records label albums rendered in near-flawless SA-CD DSD mastering, and all of them are ‘stereo-only’.

For an album like “90125”, it made a big difference! Also nice to hear “Drama” finally sounding good on CD (er, SA-CD). Hard to believe they made those old CD’s on Atlantic US, before any re-mastering had been done.

And today is Steve Howe’s birthday! These days, he looks to be the Don Knotts of progressive rock. How many groups does he play in? Sure enjoyed what he did on the Tomorrow LP, many years ago. And I found his debut solo album on Atlantic UK in Portland, OR and it still had the sticker un-stuck!

Yes “Time And A Word”

Is it really Keith Richard’s birthday? If so, he was born in 1943. Happy birthday also to Bryan “Chas” Chandler of Eric Burdon & the Animals! He also worked with The Jimi Hendrix Experience and Slade. On 12/19 Happy birthday to Alvin Lee of Ten Years After. Also on 12/19 Happy birthday to Zal Yanovsky of The Lovin’ Spoonful (1944).

Yes “Time and A Word” – ah, the 2nd album by Yes. I am not even certain I have an LP of this title; if I do, it’s in an unsorted carton, awaiting my gaze. The Japanese atereo SA-CD was what I used as my listening copy, a few nights ago.

For no real reason, I always stayed away from this Yes LP – that’s odd, as I am a big Peter Banks fan. As a youth, I guess I thought that Yes began with Steve Howe?

Well, Peter Banks is no longer in the pool hall, and Steve Howe was smashing in Tomorrow, less good on his own solo albums.

Strange choices on the cover versions. Cover versions? This band? Yep, first two Yes albums have cover versions.

Jon Anderson sounds pretty good on this album, though it does sound like he’s on his way to “Fragile” etc. The orchestra almost sounds a touch too loud on the SA-CD, so likely it was an over-dub? The keyboards sound good too, particularly for 1969. What a shame this album wasn’t in my scope of listening, as a younger man. At times, the drums almost seem buried in the mix, just a little bit. The bass has a particular 1969 sound…you know, in that year before British engineers flipped the switch and learned how to record super loud rock bands, about 1970.

I don’t know that I will rush out and buy a newly re-mastered LP of this title for $20 – $30. I’ve already got an SA-CD of it. I would definitely go for an Atlantic UK original issue LP, if that was about. Which it isn’t, or I would already have snapped one up.

So, whose girlfriend is on the UK LP cover? Even Wikipedia doesn’t say.

Yes – Jon Anderson

Happy birthday to TV star Johnny Carson (1925); Greg Ridley (of Spooky Tooth) (1941); songwriter Ellie Greenwich (1939)!

On 10/24 Happy birthday to Bill Wyman (of The Rolling Stones) (1936)! So, run and get your “In Another Land” 45 and observe this institutions’ influence / persuasion.

On 10/25, Happy birthday to singer / songwriter Jon Anderson (of Yes) (1944)! Bring on the “Olias Of Sunhillow” 5.1 SA-CD!

I actually got the Hans Christian (Jon Andersen) 45 (“Never My Love”) on a Japanese CD (“Rock Rare Collection” Toshiba TOCP-71486, 2013)! And, yes, as a matter of fact, I do enjoy “Olias Of Sunhillow”! Boy, Yes seem to really be going to town with their audiophile releases, that Japanese SA-CD boxed set (“High Vibration”), and those 5.1 discs on Blu-ray (“The Yes Album”, for instance).

While it’s nice to have SA-CD’s for the Trevor Horn albums, they’re ‘stereo only’. How about a 5.1 disc for “90125” or “Big Generator”? And, oh the many DVD’s! Do you have a “Yessongs” DVD? Or a DVD with Trevor Rabin? That one of all of their music videos is sort of amusing, “Greatest Video Hits”!   “Musik Laden” (Live in ’69 and ’71).

And the last few years have prided me with Yes 45’s for “Sweetness”, a wonderful edit for “All Good People” and the unthinkable, 45’s for “Soon”, “America” (edit, of course) and “And You & I”!

Progressive rock on Audiophile Formats

2013 SHM-CD Toshiba / Virgin Japan

On 7/25/64, the original soundtrack LP “A Hard Day’s Night” by The Beatles charted at No. 1 in the US.  On 7/27/68 the Tom Jones 45 “Help Yourself” charts at No. 3 in England.

There is scheduled to be an SA-CD boxed set of the Atlantic Records works of Yes released in Japan this coming September.  At over $400, this will take some consideration; be advised that I am an advocate of the SA-CD format.  Will it mean I can get rid of all of my other Yes CD’s, SA-CD’s and DVD-A’s?

A while back, I sought out an SA-CD boxed set from England for the Charisma Records works of Genesis (their ‘first’ box, 1970 – 1975), their first 5 Charisma albums and a bonus disc.  I got rid of all of my regular Genesis CD’s – but none of the 45’s or LP’s.  Why?  They are extremely nice ‘packages’ – a pleasure to view.  In fact, I just got Toshiba / Virgin / Charisma kami (paper) sleeves for “Foxtrot” and “Selling England By The Pound” – as the packaging in the SA-CD boxed set left a bit to be desired.

And the best work of The Moody Blues is entirely available as SA-CD’s – again, no boxed set – that I am aware of.

Mainstream progressive rock is particularly taken care of, in the “high end audio” universe – all of the ‘good’ King Crimson albums have CD + DVD-A packages (and no boxed set?);  There’s no good boxed set available for Jethro Tull, either.  There are “nice” versions of “Aqualung” and “Thick As A Brick” available, but it takes the Japanese to come up with the really aesthetically pleasing packaging of the early Jethro Tull albums.  So, I did keep my Toshiba / Chrysalis kami (paper) sleeve CD’s – despite having “Deluxe” packages for “Aqualung” etc.

There are a few other “Deluxe” packages as CD + DVD-A that I enjoy – of particular note is Caravan’s “In The Land of Grey & Pink” – probably the most obscure title available in 5.1 audio!  As of this writing, my 5.1 version of Quatermass has yet to arrive from England, so the previous sentence still holds true – at this time.

And I have yet to see the deluxe versions of Gentle Giant albums, re-mixed to 5.1 – but likely I’ll be buying those ones for the first time, as I stopped with “In A Glass House” at the time.  I can hear it now, but not at the time.  They seemed so mainstream!

So, bring on the less-mainstream UK 70’s progressive rock in audiophile formats!  How about an Arthur Brown’s Kingdom Come SA-CD boxed set?

Jon Anderson

10-25-12        Jon Anderson / Yes

Jon Anderson of Yes born 1944

This is turning into “Birthday Week” around here!

I am never really certain who is in or out of Yes at any given time.  In order to get Asia, do you have to add John Wetton?  Yes member solo careers:  I can name at least 2 Jon Anderson solo albums!  Well, I could probably also name 1 x solo album by Chris Squire, maybe 2 x Steve Howe solo albums…and Rick Wakeman doesn’t count (“I know Mudhead, but only to 10”), as he has zillions of solo albums – but how many of them are attributable to his membership in the Yes club?  Yes Club 7!  And we all have an Alan White solo album somewhere in the “W” section of our dusty record collections – don’t we?

I’ve actually seen a few permutations of Yes on stage – and maybe even a solo Jon Anderson concert (or two?).  Really, I don’t mind this stuff!  Best show (that I can still recall) was Anderson at The Roxy, fronting a bunch of children who had learned the overly-complicated Yes licks at some ‘band camp’ (or school).

“Olias Of Sunhillow”, the debut Jon Anderson solo album – certainly had lovely packaging; Nicely printed, with an extra fold, I believe.  It certainly had custom labels.  Always firmly a believer that in order to get “Yes” – you must have at least 3 members of the band present.  Can’t remember how many members of Yes are on “Olias of Sunhillow”, as I sit here typing this.  I went and checked, and the $1 LP of it that I found isn’t filed in either “A” or “Yes”, so it must be in a box somewhere here.

I was among the curious when Trevor Horn of The Buggles replaced Jon Anderson in Yes.  But I will confess that I welcomed Jon Anderson back, for “90125” (original title: “80123”, when it retailed for a dollar less!).  “Big Generator” was also always a bone of contention, at least among the set of Yes fan that I ran with.  Some hated it, others loved it.  It sounded like “Sides 3 & 4” of “90125” to me.  When the yes albums got re-mastered recently, I don’t think Rhino bothered with “Big Generator”, but Warner Japan certainly did!  (Crisp new CD mastering, SHM-CD and bonus tracks!)

Yes members (past and present) must occasionally wonder what happened to the music industry they once knew.  Where’d the suits go who approved our artwork?  Why can’t we make an album that you could buy virtually anywhere in 2012?  How come we only tour Japan now?

So, Happy Birthday, Jon Anderson – the voice of Yes.  Some of the fans still fondly remember when Yes took over that theatre in San Luis Obispo.  Probably, there are fans there waiting for that to happen a second time.  Remember when Jon Anderson played Mongo’s Saloon in Grover Beach?  (Sorry to alienate non-Central California residents, with this idle chat about S.L.O. etc.)

Misc. Calendar

8-13-12          Misc. Calendar

Singer Don Ho born 1930; The Undertones’ Feargal Sharkey born 1958; on 8-12-72 Alice Cooper’s “School’s Out” was No. 1 in England.  On 8-12-72 “20 Fantastic Hits” Various Artist LP was No. 1 in England; on 8-13-77 Yes “Going For The One” LP (with tri-fold cover) was No. 1 in England; on 8-12-78 The Stranglers “Walk On By” 45 charts at No. 21 in England.

From today’s calendar…

I own a few LP’s by Don Ho; I got my mom some cassettes (or CD’s?) of a few Don Ho album.  I saw his restaurant in Honolulu, but didn’t eat there.

I never particularly liked the Undertones, despite John Peel’s insistence.  I believe my entire collection is tracks on samplers…and eventually I added the fist CD issue of “Cher O’Bowlies”, their original ‘best of’.  I do not own any vinyl by the Undertones.

Alice Cooper is an artist I went back-and-forth with.  I wanted to like A.C., due to the Zappa connection, but that didn’t pan out.  I remember seeing them on TV in the early 70’s, and really digging it – hence my favorite being “Love It To Death” in 2012.  A short while ago, I got new Japanese re-mastered SHM-CD version of their first 4 x Warner Brothers albums, as little paper album cover CD’s.  Packaging is perfectly replicated, and the mastering sounds pretty good!

I certainly didn’t do this Yes album at the time, I was much more interested in European music by then.  When I got the guilties about selling off too many LP’s, I did go for this one, as an LP (my CD is the first re-mastering, not a bonus tracks vers.) – and the tri-fold LP packaging is impressive, even if the music is less than impressive.  This over-indulgence in packaging MUST be one of the things that punk rock / new wave were ‘against’!

And finally, the dear old Stranglers!  Love ‘em!  It was always amusing that they gave away a 45 with the original long version of this song, then decided to issue an edited version of it and it charted.  The free 45 came in “Black & White”, their 3rd album.  I really got on board by ’79, with “The Raven”.

I duly saw them live at the Whisky A-Go-Go; perhaps the sole time I ever saw the band on a stage, as they did not frequent the west coast of the U.S.!  I totally stayed with them until Hugh Cornwell left, in 1990.  And I’ve been lucky enough to see Hugh Cornwell play live a few times, here in Los Angeles.  I really rather enjoyed “Hooverdam”, his last studio solo album.

Added bonus to the “Walk On By” hit single:  George Melly! (“Old Codger”)
