Spooky Tooth

Happy birthday to Spooky Tooth singer Mike Harrison (1945) and Don Brewer of Grand Funk Railroad (1948).

I remember well the teaser advertisements saying “Spooky Tooth is coming”, probably about 1968 or 1969. I had no idea they were a British band, a beat group, a psychedelic band, whatsoever. I doubt I even saw their debut album, when it appeared on Bell Records in the US.

I finally heard them about 1970, with the superlative album “The Last Puff”. Sounds like a Joe Cocker record, only better written, better played, better sung! You have to know this album!

All these years pass on by, and I’m still looking for some Spooky Tooth stuff! There are STILL lots of 45’s I need! I’m getting there, but not quite…

Ryuichi Sakamoto

Today, happy birthday to jazz bassist Charlie Haden (1937). On 8-7, happy birthday to Stan Freberg! Where’s the “Orville” movie? Also Robert Mitchum (1917) and Andy Warhol (1927).

Certainly by the time of “Neo Geo”, I was busily buying Ryuichi Sakamoto CD’s. Did he make any more LP’s after that? Why, yes, he did!

In 1990 Virgin US released an LP of “Beauty”, a fabulous LP; my original release LP has custom labels and a spiffy innersleeve. The only place song titles are easy to read is in tiny lettering on the reverse cover of the LP! Have you heard the Robert Wyatt vocal on “We Love You”, the Rolling Stones song covered on this LP?

Also in 1990, Virgin US did a 12” single of “You Do Me”, the track from “Beauty” sung by Prince protégé Jill Jones. Looks to be approx. 30 minutes of music on this promo 12”!

After the 1990 releases on Virgin US, I thought Virgin US had thrown in the towel, but no! I found a ’92 promo 12” of “Heartbeat”, labeled as “Ventricle” and “Auricle” sides.

Many moons later (’98) Mr. Sakamoto had a 12” single on Ninja Tune, out of the UK, taken from his “Dischord” CD, “Anger” b/w “Grief” with remixes by Amon Tobin and Talvin Singh, among others.

Bringing us to the current century, right after it came out in Japan, somebody on eBay had an LP for “Chasm” (’04) for a super low price. I bid the minimum, and a few weeks later an LP of it arrived at my home. This is one of the last great albums Mr. Sakamoto did, that I am aware of. The LP has 11 songs to the CD having 14 (or 15) tracks.

So that’s what I’ve found on vinyl for Ryuichi Sakamoto for almost the last 20 years!

Queen

Tomorrow 6/19, Happy birthday to Elaine “Spanky” McFarlane (of Spanky & Our Gang) (1942)!

I am a ‘new’ Queen fan. I never particularly bothered with them, while they were originally active, but now I can see the UK glam rock value of their output. On my recent trip to Japan, I got all of their albums on CD, up to the ubiquitous “Live” album, “Live Killers”. I don’t think I’ve ever even heard “Queen II” – ever!

New Zealand / Australia

Yesterday 2/8, Happy Birthday to Jim Capaldi of Traffic (1944).

Today, Happy Birthday to Carole King (1941) and Mia Farrow (1945).

Australia / New Zealand

My love affair with New Zealand is well-documented elsewwhere. I went there 7 times in the 80’s, and met all of the main people I ever wanted to meet. Chris Knox was always a gracious host, I remember a new year’s day event I went to at his house, once upon a time. He told me he saw me walking on K Road, out of the window of the bus, and thought, “That’s unusual”, as I was wearing red pants.

I had been asking about Split Enz all over NZ! Finally, a store in Christchurch sent me a discography on them, and I discovered they were once called Split Ends! I managed to find all of the NZ 45’s on them, eventually. There are people I have collected Split Enz with, all over the world. Saw what was supposed to be their final live shows ever, in Auckland in 1984. I witnessed the Aeotea Square riot in Auckland.

I knew Murray Cammick (Rip It Up publisher) in Auckland (still do) and Gary Steel (IT / Tom publisher) in Wellington (still do). Through these fine men, I could get in touch with anybody who interested me in New Zealand music. Gary had friends at TVNZ up in The Hutt Valley, and Murray Cammick knew absolutely everyone. Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Fane Flaws. “I Am Joe’s Music” is still probably one of the best records you’ve never heard.

A moment of silence for Silvio’s Records on Cuba Street in Wellington. Stan & Steve hipped me to so much stuff over the years! I doubt there’s a version of Silvio’s still in operation down there.

I only ever went to Australia once, actually. Probably could go back there, with varying degrees of success. In 1987, I finally walked on Australian soil. Sorry Sydney people, I’m a Melbourne kind of guy. And there are literally dozens of Australian artists that I love and collect. Ladies and gentlemen, Mr. Barry Humphries! Dame Edna to British people, Sir Les Patterson, to others. That’s right, comedy LP’s! And I do believe I have a full set on Mr. Humphries.

So do you collect any of the zillions of “M” artists in Australia? Models, Mental As Anything, Mondo Rock, Men At Work, Midnight Oil, Machinations? Do you have any idea how good “Uptown” by Machinations is? That record drives me nuts in 2015!

The ABC TV show “Rage” is easily the best regular TV show on Earth. Watch any of the “Rage Goes Retro” (January) episodes and see if you don’t agree.

France

Happy birthday to Texan guitarist / singer / songwriter Johnny “Guitar” Watson (1935), Dave Davies (of The Kinks, 1947) and singer Melanie (1947). This is also “the day the music died” – Buddy Holly, The Big Bopper and Richie Valens all go offshore, permanently.

France

My first exposure to France’s pop culture was in the 70’s – I got the debut LP by Michel Berger, the on one WEA with the heart on the cover. It was recorded at Chateau D’Herouville, like some really good Elton John LP’s had been. It’s pleasant enough pop music, and he passed away in the early 90’s of a heart attack.

Next blip on the musicology radar was when I got the debut LP by Lard Free, on Vamp. Lard Free = L’Art Frit = Free Art, but a slight perversion of that translation. It was like nothing else I had ever heard, and I had no trouble believing in it. In 1979, when I first went to Paris, I met Gilles Yepremian, Lard Free’s manager – he lived in Pigalle, then. I also met Roland Bocquet, the keyboard player who made a great not-on-CD album called “Paradia” on Cobra Records. Roland had been the keyboard player for a band called Catharsis.

There used to be a company up in Portland, OR called Intergalactic Trading Company. I dealt with a guy called Archie Patterson. He sold me all kinds of oddball French pop (and not-so-pop) musique.

In Paris, I particularly liked Crocodisc, on the rue des Ecoles, left bank. I also frequented FNAC, the large co-op record store. I succeeded in seeing Jacques Higelin; I did not succeed in seeing L’Affaire Louis’ Trio – their show had been cancelled and moved to a much later date (Pre-internet world! N’existe pas maintenant!).

Then there is the post-CD world of French pop musique, with all those wonderful clips on Boulevard Des Clips. Thrill to Les Rita Mitsouko (saw ‘em in L.A.!), Niagara, Charlelie Couture (saw ‘em in Malakoff, in Paris), Etienne Daho, Les Drellas, Jay Alanski (he wrote back to me!). And so many others! Peter & The Electro Kitsch keyboard player Igor Bolender was actually in my car, a few times. His wife Yael moved to Los Angeles, to be closer to the spirits of Jim Morrison and Mark Hollis, the Talk Talk singer. Here’s her store, where I DJ almost monthly: http://www.cuculapraline-frenchic.com/

And the food is really good in France! I love having dinner at La Coupole, in Montparnasse. When I die that’s where you should have my wake. And order something really good! And go downstairs and look at the decorative stuff by the restrooms. I think it used to be a dancehall, in the 30’s. Haven’t been there lately, so my info might be old hat now.

Happy birthday to ECM jazz artist John Abercrombie (1944), also to jazz guy Joe Ferrell (1937); singer / performer / songwriter Noel Coward (1899)!

Last weekend, I went out to Rhino Claremont’s parking lot sale. I have had real good luck before, and last Saturday was no different.

Alpha’d LP Carton

Happy birthday to R&B singer Tina Turner (1941); jazzer Paul Desmond (1924); MTV ‘video jock’ J. J. Jackson, though nobody is quite sure what year.

As I have started working on re-typing all of my LP collection, I thought I’d share what a ”typical” assorted / misc. carton is like for vinyl LP’s. The designation after the label is what country the pressing is from. There are further designatio9ns (such as inserts), but it wasn’t feasible to include that here. Yes, I have alpha’d the list.

What did you buy in Chicago?

Happy birthday to Geddy Lee of Rush! (1950).

A bit stuck on what to write about today. Still kind of tired after my Chicago trip.

“What did you buy in Chicago?”

Vinyl:

CHARLES SINGERS, RAY –SPECIAL SOMETHING, COMMAND US LP

Still in shrinkwrap ($4), this easy listening treat looks to be from approx. ’67 – ’68.

DELUGG, MILTON –MUSIC FOR MONSTERS…, EPIC US LP

Jack Davis cover art! Full title: “Music for Monsters, Munsters, Mummies & Other TV Fiends” – and it’s a stereo copy!

HAYES, TUBBY –INTRODUCING TUBBS, EPIC US LP re-issue

Legit re-issue of probably Tubbs’ only US LP; British jazz!

LEWIS, VIC –IN CONCERT, FEAT. TUBBY HAYES, HEP UK LP

I believe Vic Lewis (much later on) arranged for Donovan! And more Tubby Hayes!

PORTSMOUTH SINFONIA –HALLELUJAH, TRANSATLANTIC UK LP

Finally! A UK original copy, and not a dumb Antilles US LP!

SECOND HAND –DEATH MAY BE YOUR SANTA CLAUS, SUNBEAM UK LP re-issue

I never had any idea that the originals of this LP were so limited! Liner notes say 1,000 copies only!

CD:

AUSTERLITZ, PAUL – JOURNEY, INNOVA US CD

Looks like a bass clarinet player…and on this label, wow!
