Happy birthday Dr. John (Mac Rebennack) (1940) and Lonnie Jordan (of War) (1948).

Happy birthday, Lucio Battisti! (Born 1943).  On 3/5/66, the LP “Going Places” by Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass charts at No. 1 in the US.  Also on 3/5/66 the Lou Christie 45 “Lightning Strikes” charts at No. 11 in England.  Also on 3/5/66 the Hollies 45 “I Can’t let Go” charts at No. 2 in England.  John Belushi croaks, 1982.  Happy birthday, Mark E. Smith (of The Fall), born 1957.

I recently read about a series of CD’s being issued in Japan by Atlantic Records for a very low price, 1,000 yen.  When I looked at the list, there seemed to be lots of titles that had never seen the light of day on CD before (that I was aware of, anyway).

I ordered and received these titles:

McPHATTER, CLYDE / THE DRIFTERS ROCK & ROLL, ATLANTIC JPN CD mono

TURNER, JOE ROCK & ROLL, ATLANTIC JPN CD mono

MARKEYS, THE DO THE POPEYE WITH…, ATLANTIC JPN CD mono

BAKER, MICKEY WILDEST GUITAR, ATLANTIC JPN CD stereo

RUSH, OTIS MOURNING IN THE MORNING, ATLANTIC JPN CD stereo

KING, FREDDIE MY FEELING FOR THE BLUES, ATLANTIC JPN CD stereo

V.A. SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE UPTOWN, ATLANTIC JPN CD stereo

Wow, some amazing stuff!  I was always a big fan of “Lover Please” by Clyde McPhatter, so it was a treat to hear his work with The Drifters.  I can’t imagine how many people heard this astonishing Big Joe Turner album – Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan etc.  The Mar-Keys are basically Booker T. & The MG’s with a horn section, but in 1962.  Great instrumental groove!  Mickey Baker is a guitarist and is wonderful – great 1959 stereo, too!  The albums by Otis Rush and Freddie King are late 60’s / early 70’s electric blues albums – just fabulous!  And – finally – “Saturday Night At The Uptown” is a stereo 1964 live recording of The Drifters, Patty & The Emblems, The Vibrations, Wilson Pickett, Patti LaBelle & Her Bluebells, The Carltons and Barbara Lynn!

It is seldom that you ever see any of these titles on LP.  I’ve never seen a Mar-Keys LP!  I definitely collect sampler LP’s on Atlantic, and I’ve never seen the “Saturday Night At The Uptown” LP!  I will go out on a limb and suggest that I never saw the Mickey Baker LP because stores would probably have a problem about where to file the LP – R&B or jazz?

It made me pretty happy to listen to these albums on CD!  Makes me want to find more Mar-Keys titles on vinyl or CD!  Where’s my copy of the Mickey Baker LP lurking?

Despite being an R&B act, they made what is probably my favorite version of The Beatles’ “Abbey Road” album, “McLemore Avenue”.  That’s right – they cover darn near all of “Abbey Road” in the Booker T. style.

Booker T. is still alive.  Steve Cropper is still alive.

I recently DJ’d a 60’s night, and I gave “Hip Hug-Her” a spin – and people danced.  That’s right.

A few nights ago, I listened to the whole 1967 “Hip Hug-Her” album, and was blown away at how clean it sounded.  Yes, I’ve only mostly got CD’s on these boys in 2011.
