Record Collector Swap Meets

Happy birthday to Ozzy Osbourne (1948). And my Uncle Shirley was born many years ago. He taught me to play pool!

There will be no swap meet at Buena Park in January or February; so that means my next swap meet will be Claremont on 2/21! And I only bought 2 records (LP’s) at the November 2015 Buena Park swap meet!

I used to go to the Capitol Records parking lot swap meet, in the mid-70’s with my late brother. We sold there a few times, too. I also remember going to a swap meet at a nightclub in Reseda; a place on Pico Blvd. near where Record Surplus used to be; hotels in Long Beach / Lakewood / Torrance etc. Swap Meets are a way of record collector life!

So, a big shout out to the Newark Swap Meet! KFJC, too! Emeryville! Amazing swap meets with many friends / foes. I remember watching one of the S.F. bootleg LP guys get busted for selling illegal material – by no less than the F.B.I.!

How about driving up to San Luis Obispo to a record faire? I remember one where Cheap Thrills brought out a ton of 60’s 45’s! And, of course, different / weird stuff of all kinds.

I once went to a Tokyo, Japan swap meet for record collectors, in Ikebukuro. The way it worked was: guys brought boxes of LP for sale, each table had a number. So, when I arrive, there’s nobody to talk to about the LP’s! If I wanted one, I take it to a cashier by the door and pay. Weird, but efficient.

I remember going to De Artis in Amsterdam; Clubhaus Antonius in Leiden…never went to a French, Belgian, Italian or Spanish record faire, however. When I lived in England, I got to go to one at Swindon. I remember marveling at the portraits painted on a wall near the train station: Andy Partridge, Justin Hayward etc. Probably also went to a swap meet in Bristol.

The first swap meet I think I ever went to was at the fairgrounds in Pomona, CA – probably about 1969 (?) – at the time, I was collecting DC comics and Mad Magazines! I never dreamed that entire swap meets would ever get dedicated to the art of collecting phonograph records!

And, yes, unbelievers – it is an art to collect phonograph records. I have only been partially successful in this endeavor. “Please complete your collection!”, I used to see signs in Tokyo. This admonishment really hit home. How was I ever going to get all of the phonograph records I wanted? I only had a little bit of cash, but at least I was young – not all that long ago. I continue to try to complete my collection.

Claremont Swap Meet

On 2/13 Happy Birthday to Peter Tork of The Monkees (1946).
