Bryan Ferry

Happy birthday Homer (Homer & Jethro)(1920), Paul Cook (Sex Pistols) (1956) and Bobbie Gentry (“Ode To Billie Joe”) (1944).

BRYAN FERRY

I’ve known who / what Bryan Ferry is since 1972, when I tried the debut LP by Roxy Music.  I do not remember what I was expecting, but I had read about them (in the UK press).  I bought the LP @ Mundae Records, on the pier, in Belmont Shore, probably for $5 (or a penny less).  At any rate, I did not remain a Roxy Music fan for very long – my limited attention span notwithstanding.  And I did not initially go for Bryan Ferry solo records – at all.  It wasn’t until he started doing re-makes of Roxy Music songs that I actually liked that I bought anything of his solo career.

Roxy Music

Happy birthday Woody Guthrie (1912) and troublemaker Jerry Rubin (1938).

They all have long hair! Another “hippie” band?

At least initially, it is striking how ‘different’ Bryan Ferry sounds – to other things of the day (1972). Interesting, too, that the debut album is a “pop” as it is, with the rock & roll pastiche…keeping in mind that the LP was produced by no less than King Crimson’s lyricist, Peter Sinfield.

Gee, on the debut Roxy Music album Mr. Ferry looks to be a bit stingy with sharing the writing credits, though that deal may have been pre-arranged with E.G. And I do detect them all trying to ‘play up’ the band’s connection to rock & roll / rock music.

By the time of the 2nd album, “For Your Pleasure”, there seems to be a few more smiles than can be generally associated with Roxy Music – even from Mr. Ferry!

I’d be lying if I said I continued. I did not, wandering off towards greener pastures in German music / French music etc. That’s why the 3rd and 4th albums by Roxy Music kind of blur together, for myself. I remember my concern when the 5th album got so danged popular; it made Roxy Music ‘common’! A hit single?

You certainly can’t accuse them of being slack, on the work ethic. An album a year, together with touring – decent. Then consider that Mr. Ferry also had a solo career! What a busy man!

I wonder what E.G thought Roxy Music would do? Yes, they found popularity rather a long distance from their debut album. I can almost hear someone saying “Put ‘em in suits!” – an art director, perhaps?

“Manifesto” certainly made for interesting listening. But what are all of those albums that came out after the proper albums? Are they all ‘live’ albums? Not sure that I want to have lunch with that one.

The singer of Roxy Music on the cover!  OMD in the colour centerfold.  Lyrics for “Christine” by Siouxsie & The Banshees.  Roxy Music: “Stronger through the years”.  Joe Jackson goes reggae with “The Harder They Come”.  Eddie Tenpole of Tenpole Tudor’s #1 in his Top 10 is The Rolling Stones “Get Off Of My Cloud”.  Squeeze: “It’s tough in the middle.”  Full page advertisement for the new Queen single, “Play The Game”.  Full page advertisement for Ultravox “Three Into One – the LP John Foxx objected to!  Request Spot:  Ultravox “The Man Who Dies Every Day” lyrics (and a snappy photo).  U2:  “Another Irish import”.

45’s:

Pink Military – “Do Animals Believe In God?” (Erics Records)

Athletico Spizz 80 – “No Room” (Rough Trade Records)

The Stranglers – “Who Wants The World” (United Artists Records)

John Cooper Clarke – “The It Man” (Epic Records)

Basement 5 – “Silicone Chip” (Island Records)

LP’s:

Grace Jones – “Warm Leatherette” (Island Records)

Peter Gabriel – III (AKA “Peter Gabriel”) (Charisma Records)

Roxy Music – “Flesh and Blood” (EG / Polydor Records)

Funny, I remember the Pink Military 45 as being “Did You See Her?”.  In only a short while, Athletico Spizz 80 would transmogrify into The Spizzles – this 45 was nothin’ special.  The Stranglers were changing, too.  Odd that JCC made singles; his type of delivery worked better on an LP.

Wasn’t Basement 5 a group that had somebody (non-musician) famous in it?  Not quite reggae, but with ‘reggae elements’?  I kept their LP + 10“ (and CD!).

Grace Jones became much more important when her next album, “Nightclubbing”, came along in another year or so.  I never ‘got’ Peter Gabriel’s solo career until many years after the fact.  I never particularly cared for “Games Without Frontiers”; I have it in 5.1 on a DVD.  Sure would like to stumble across an SA-CD of PG3!  One day, I should probably listen to this Roxy Music album.  I’m pretty sure I have both an LP & CD of it – in the vault.  I recently watched a Phil Manzanera documentary, and the Roxy Music stuff looked pretty good, all the way up to the re-formation tour of 2001.

Roxy Music – “Siren” (1975)

Roxy Music – “Siren” (1975)

Last Saturday, I asked readers to tell me what the last album they had listened to was.  David Zimelis said:

Roxy Music

LP SIREN      ATCO US        SD 36-127        1975 9 TRKS

CD SIREN      VIRGIN JPN   VJCP-68825     1975 9 TRKS (’07 issue) Kami sleeve, HDCD

Specifically on LP, he said.  The fifth Roxy Music album, and considering that they began in 1972, that’s more than one album per year!  For myself, I have made do with the US Atco LP and the ’07 issue on Virgin Japan in a little paper album cover CD, an “HDCD” (High Definition Compact Disc), no less.

For my ears, it was the law of diminishing averages with Roxy Music – I liked the first one best, and each one successively less.  With “Siren”, they finally found US success with “Love Is The Drug”, though I think I prefer Grace Jones’ version.  Jerry Hall slinks on the cover; the original version of the band is still fairly intact – minus Brian Eno, of course – and adding musicians Edwin “Eddie” Jobson (from Curved Air) and John Gustafson (notably from Quatermass).  Phil Manzanera has 2 x co-writes on this album, Andy Mackay fares the same with 2, Eddie Jobson has merely 1 x co-write credit.  Engineered by Steve Nye, who would later record and produce the seminal Roxy Music-copyist band Japan; produced by Chris Thomas (who also produced some nice John Cale music).

“Love Is The Drug” was unleashed as a single in England in October 1975, followed by “Both Ends Burning” in December 1975.  It was the final album of all-new material that Roxy Music delivered to Island Records, England, too.  They signed to Polydor UK for their next studio album, “Manifesto” (1979) – to which I paid absolutely no attention at all until many years later.

In 1975, I was so enchanted with European music, with no time for Roxy Music, particularly as they now seemed so…”commercial”.  My high school snobbery served me well, I greatly preferred Phil Manzanera’s debut solo album “Diamond Head” (1975), with both Robert Wyatt and Brian Eno participating.

When I get the chance, I’ll give “Siren” a spin and see how it sounds to me now.  I bet I’ll really be able to hear the ’75 vintage equipment, and the quietness of the studio: Air Studios, London (then-owned by Sir George Martin).  Real drums, real saxes, real guitars, real bass, some synths – and some Bryan Ferry.

In 2011, I have time for most any real studio recordings by Roxy Music, as long as it’s Ferry, Manzanera, Mackay and Thompson.  I guess there isn’t a Bryan Ferry solo album for ’75; in ’76 he released “Let’s Stick Together”, which was a pretty good album.
