Drums & Wires in 5.1

Happy birthday to Martin Chambers (of The Pretenders) (1951)!

Tomorrow, 9/5 Happy birthday to singer / songwriter Loudon Wainwright III (1946); British glam rock singer Freddie Mercury (of Queen) (1946)!

https://www.burningshed.com/store/ape/product/351/6070/

As you almost assuredly already know, there is going to be a new version of an old favorite, “Drums & Wires” by XTC, complete with Steve Wilson 5.1 remixes!

This was never my favorite XTC album, but I am ready to shell out for the new version, remixes, 5.1 aspect. I was (and am) a huge fan of “White Music” and “Go 2”, absolutely loving their keyboard sound that was dispensed with on “Drums & Wires”.

But with all those B-Sides! Looks like a package that’s done right.

XTC 45’s

Yesterday 7/13 happy birthday Roger / Jim McGuinn of The Byrds (1942, Chicago, IL). Woody Guthrie is said to have been born in 1912, on this date.

I got on the XTC bandwagon quite a while ago. I missed a few essential items, but got tons of everything else. I’m not quite done, either. At some point, I tried to get stuff as 12” singles, with less emphasis on 7” singles. Silly me!

1978 brings us:

Saw ‘em live!  Tried to get everything at the time of release!  Didn’t want to list all the myriad of 7” & 10” releases today.  I followed the members to other groups – Restaurant for Dogs / Shreikback, L’Affaire Louis’ Trio etc.  And I read that some XTC titles will get the 5.1 treatment from Steve Wilson sometime soon!

Smash Hits (Vol. 2 No. 16) August 7 – 20, 1980

SH 1980.08.07

On 8/7/65 the Jonathan King 45 “Everyone’s Gone To The Moon” charts at No. 4 in England.  On 8/7/71 the Family 45 “In My Own Time” charts at No. 4 in England.

Bob Marley on the cover.  John Foxx on the back cover.  Full page ad for “Ashes To Ashes” by David Bowie (and the lyrics reproduced).  Lyrics printed for Grace Jones “Private Life” (a Pretenders song) and Roxy Music’s “Oh Yeah”.  New Musik announce their 2nd album, to be called “After The Fire” – but I bet this is the album that eventually was released as “Anywhere” (plus big New Musik article).  The Selecter leave Two Tone Records.  Full page ad for Hazel O’Connor “Breaking Glass” O.S.T. (A&M Records).  Bad Manners in the centerfold.  “The Quality Of Mersey” article says “Liverpool is going to be the next big thing (again)” with a snazzy photo of Pete Burns (from Nightmares In Wax).  Lyrics for Magazine’s wonderful “Sweetheart Contract”.

45’s:

  • Comateens “Late Night City” (Criminal Records)
  • David Bowie “Ashes To Ashes” (RCA Records)
  • Athletico Spizz 80 “Hot Deserts” (A&M Records)
  • The B-52’s “Give Me Back My Man” (Island Records)

LP’s:

  • Cabaret Voltaire “The Voice of America” (Rough Trade Records)
  • Split Enz “True Colours” (A&M Records)
  • John Otway & Wild Willy Barrett “Way & Bar” (Polydor Records)
  • Siouxsie & The Banshees “Kaleidoscope” (Polydor Records)

Gigs by Ultravox, Pink Floyd, Athletico Spizz 80, Barbara Dickson, Madness, Mo-Dettes, Bill Nelson, The Selecter, Rainbow, Judas Priest, Saxon, Hot Chocolate, Elvis Costello, Lene Lovich, The Stranglers, The Ramones…

First time I’ve seen a mention of Comateens.  Didn’t care about Bowie in 1980, but am OK with him now.  I was strongly following Athletico Spizz 80, but “Hot Deserts” seemed to be a mis-step, as I cannot now recall the tune in 2013.  The B-52’s were also off of my radar by now.  I cannot remember if I was still ‘trying’ Cabaret Voltaire records or not – not 100% certain that “Voice of America” ever made it through my doors or not.

Longtime readers of this blog will know that I had a special affinity for Split Enz, in 1980 – along with the rest of the music being produced in New Zealand.

August 1980 Cassette

1980.08 K7

On 8/1/59 The Chipmunks “Ragtime Cowboy Joe” charts at No. 11 in England.  The Associates “The Affectionate Punch” released in England on 8/1/80.  On 8/4/73 the Suzi Quatro 45 “48 Crash” charts at No. 3 in England.

MISC ETC 8/80 A

BOB MARLEY & THE WAILERS – probably “Jamming” from a 45

ATHLETICO SPIZZ 80 – Still probably from the “Do A Runner” LP

HERMETO PASCOAL – Not sure which one this would’ve been, maybe “Zebumba Bum A”?

MAGAZINE – Probably one of the post-“Upside Down” 45’s, or something from the 3rd album?

MARTHA & THE MUFFINS – There were a lot of singles from their debut album, which one is this?

THE BOYS NEXT DOOR – Maybe a final entry from “Hee Haw”?

JACQUES PLAFOND – Something from his wonderful “Hark!” LP on CBS NL

GRUPPO SPORTIVO – A Post-Buddy Odor Stop 45 perhaps?

JOHN OTWAY – Maybe a single from “Where Did I Go Right?”

ARIEL KALMA – Perhaps something from “Osmose”, but faded out quickly?

 B:

THE BIRTHDAY PARTY – Possibly their debut record as The Birthday Party, “Happy Birthday”

DALEK I – Possibly a single or something from the “Kum Pass” LP

JOHN FOXX – A latter day single from “Metamatic”?

LUNA – Likely the Italian band, with members of Osanna

MARIANNE FAITHFULL – Something from “Broken English”, I bet

PHILIPPE DORAY – This one had a grey cover, and is French

THE CURE – Likely a post-“17 Seconds” single; I never went for the 3rd album

FISCHER Z – Something from “Word Salad” or a 45 from it?

PHILIP GLASS – Was this the Tomato Records era yet?

BENOIT WIDEMANN – Again, a French guy, a member of Magma etc.

MOTORHEAD – An “Ace of Spades” single, perhaps?

XTC – Maybe from the Japanese “Live & More” 12”?

SUN RA – Probably had seen him live and was still hopping around to “Moonship Journey”

I’m sorry that my monthly cassette project didn’t really pan out, with full titles for everything.  Sometimes I can figure it out, other times – a bit of a mystery.

Here endeth this particular lesson!
