  3. NOBLE SISSLE feat. SIDNEY BECHET – Dear Old Southland
  4. FRANKIE TRAUMBAUER feat. BIX BEIDERBECKE – Singing’ The Blues
  5. LOUIS ARMSTRONG – St. Louis Blues
  6. DUKE ELLINGTON – The Mooche
  7. FLETCHER HENDERSON – Hotter Than ‘Ell
  8. BENNY GOODMAN – King Porter Stomp
  9. ARTIE SHAW – Begin The Beguine
  10. DUKE ELLINGTON – Cotton Tail
  11. COUNT BASIE – Jumpin’ At The Woodside
  12. BILLIE HOLIDAY – Solitude

Tom Jones

Happy birthday to Dean Martin (1917); singer / songwriter Prince (1960); and to Welsh singer Tom Jones (1940)!

I remember watching The Bee Gees on Tom Jones’ TV show.  I saw him live a few years ago and it was much better than expected.  He still had “it”.  These days, I buy as much UK product as I can source on him.

Focus

Happy birthday Herb Alpert (A&M Records) (1935) and Thijs Van Leer (Focus) (1948).

I like ‘em both, but you’ll get Focus from me today! I remember seeing them on TV, too – I was *amazed*! I was already heading towards Europe, mostly via Germany. But Focus were a Dutch band I could really get behind – or along with. Thijs van Leer and Jan Akkerman have solo albums, but not going to do those today. Each deserves their own!

Film Intersecting Music

2016.01.11

Happy birthday singer Maggie Bell (Stone The Crows) (1945). I understand that the debut LP of Stone The Crows (“Stone The Crows”) will be available on CD shortly. Always did like that LP! I heard it on the FM radio about 1970, and went in search of it.

The FM radio used to play a role in me developing my taste. I first heard Love Sculpture on the FM radio! Of course, the TV also alerted me to stuff…during the 80’s. MuchMusic, MTV, Goodnight L.A. all had stuff I hadn’t paid attention to before.

It wouldn’t be out of line to say that the TV also helped form my present knowledge. When video (Beta) came in, I could watch movies at home – and really begin to understand great directors, like John Cassavetes, Roman Polanski etc. When they were theatre-only, it was difficult to even see those films!

I never seemed to get the same change out of films that I did out of music. Sometimes the two topics collided, as in “O Lucky Man” with a brilliant score by Alan Price.

Incredible String Band

Happy birthday Robin Williamson (of the Incredible String Band) (1943), singer / songwriter Lee Michaels (1945) and British guitarist Gary Boyle (of Isotope).

When did I first become aware of The Incredible String Band? Reading about them (but not hearing them) in a Hit Parader magazine? Or maybe I just saw their stuff (LP’s) filed in the “Folk” section of hippie record stores? Or both?

I seem to recall my route to them was not “direct”, I believe I bought a 4-track tape of “Hangman’s Beautiful Daughter” and had to stick a mechanical device into the cartridge to get it to play in an 8-track tape player, in my parents car (a Lincoln Continental that came with a ‘Lear Jet’ 8-track tape player). And even at age 10 or 11, I knew how to get music off of a variety of sources. Thus far, I do not believe I ever heard them on radio – but there’s only so many LP’s released around this time. What on Earth do they sound like?

Paul McCartney says he likes them. Oh, they must be good / OK. Any band with a LP title like “Liquid Acrobat As Regards The Air” HAS to be good, right? An older brother of a school friend plays me that album, and I am hooked.

So, without really understanding the machinations involved in getting I.S.B. music to my youthful years, I carried on. ‘Blues rock’ was more prevalent, at that time – bands like The Groundhogs, The Edgar Broughton Band etc. But I could still find the time and place for the I.S.B.! Oh, wait – they’ve broken up? They’re scientologists? They hate each other? There’s Mike Heron and Robin Williamson solo albums already?

An Elektra (US) monthly sampler LP told me what I needed to know about the debut Mike Heron LP (“Smiling Men With Bad Reputations”), with a glorious song “Call Me Diamond”. It certainly didn’t hurt that the other song Elektra chose to ‘show off’ Mr. Heron’s work was “Warm Heart Pastry”, a track where he is backed by no less than The Who in 1970!

The I.S.B. has concluded and it takes me a few years to get UK Elektra or Island pressings of most all of their albums. I bought everything I could find on both Mike and Robin, though there’s not all that much stuff. I seem to have 4 or 5 Robin Williamson LP’s, but they’re US pressings, mostly. The Mike Heron stuff is entirely UK pressings, but the debut album is more impressive to me, still! And am I done collecting them? By no means, I only have 1 x Elektra 45! And no Island (UK) 45’s! And maybe missing a few UK pressings of earlier albums.

Yes, it would be considered ‘folk’ music; yes, some of it is very electric. As Williamson is Scottish, it’s not a million miles from that era of Donovan work, but that is not how I would classify it. It’s it’s own thing. And YES I am a fan of Dr. Strangely Strange, the Irish band who loved The Incredible String Band, but that’s another tale to tell.

Roxy – The Movie

Happy birthday Ray Collins (singer of The Mothers Of Invention) (1937).

Recently, while in Portland, OR I had the option to buy the new Frank Zappa album, “Roxy – The Movie”. I selected the CD + Blu-ray version and bought it at Music Millennium (a store very much like Rhino Claremont).

First off, this is NOT “The Roxy & Elsewhere” double LP nor is it the “Roxy By Proxy” recent CD; it’s a whole new kettle of fish! It will be easy to find, if you look for it this year, but – no guarantees after 2015!

I have heard for decades that they (The ZFT = Zappa Family Trust) have TONS of unsynched / unsynchable footage of the December 1973 Roxy shows by Frank Zappa & The Mothers. Someone who used to work for Mr. Zappa told me that.

However, what wouldn’t have been possible even 5 years ago is now…commonplace? That someone with a computer can, in fact, synch up unsynchable footage? Well, that’s true. And someone did synch up a whole bunch of Roxy footage! And it doesn’t look bad at all, if you can forgive some absent pixie dust, and Mr. Zappa’s usual warning about stuff being “live” and “not overdubbed”.

It is heavily mightily “synched” – when they don’t know what to do, something goes to soft focus or the backs of heads. And, I must say, Pamela Miller never looked better!

There’s an 11 track CD that comes with the movie, though the 5.1 mix of the movie audio will likely suggest that I watch the movie again, as opposed to play the CD. The packaging says Mr. Zappa mixed the whole thing to quad in 1974…

And it’s the first Frank Zappa blu-ray disc! Let’s hope they have more waiting in the tank, ‘cause this one was fun. “Dub Room Special”, “200 Motels”, “Baby Snakes” can all be re-sold to Zappa fans, anxiously awaiting further blu-ray releases. But what will they do?

Certainly they don’t seem to be hurrying to release any more DVD-A releases, like the powerful “Quadraphiliac” (or thereabouts). Mr. Zappa himself did, in fact, mix lots of his 70’s work into quad, so one thinks it could possible that the ZFT lets go…but at this point, it seems somewhat unlikely.

King Crimson

Happy birthday Danielle Dax (1958), jazz guy John Coltrane (1926), guitarist Roy Buchanan (1939) and R&B guy Ray Charles (1932).

Like many folks, I am only really enthusiastic about the initial incarnation of King Crimson, the band that seemed to change with each album.

Even for the debut album, “In The Court Of The Crimson King” (40th anniversary CD + DVD), you get the entire album re-mastered and 5 x bonus tracks – on just the CD! The DVD has the 5.1 surround version of the album in both MLP Lossless 5.1 Surround and DTS 5.1 Digital Surround. If one is unhappy with the new 5.1 mix (which I like very much), then you can also have the album as a 2004 stereo “master” edition, and 2009 Steve Wilson mix, the set noting “CD bonus tracks and alternate takes”…and video content from 1969, “Hyde Park” with “original audio from the actual performance”.

I was 11 years old when this LP came out, probably enjoyed it a ton when I was about 12 – despite the fact that I was listening to a U.S. Atlantic Records pressing, at that time.

“In The Wake Of Poseidon” came out when I was 12 / 13, and I bought it as a new release. This 40th anniversary set has the entire album on the CD with “Groon” (a 45 B-Side) added. They note in the liner notes that “The Devil’s Triangle” was up-mixed to 5.1 from stereo masters, and all of the previously mentioned “master edition” etc. per the previous DVD-A. 3 versions of the LP & a whole bunch of takes of “Groon” & “Cadence and Cascade”. The previous album had Robert Fripp liner notes, while this CD + DVD only seems to have Sid Smith liner notes.

I bought “Lizard” as a new release, upon it’s initial release in 1970; making me 12 / 13 years old. Robert Fripp & Sid Smith lines notes on this issue. The usual suspects on the DVD-A, hey! Where’d Greg Lake go? Experimental? Yes. British jazz? Check.

“Islands” had 2 completely differing packages between the US & UK LP’s. Thankfully, I never had to choose between the two, as I always had both – from initial release. Remixed album in stereo has double the tracks of the LP on CD. DVD-A, the usual suspects. More jazz guys. A lot for a 13 year old to swallow.

“Larks Tongues In Aspic” (1973) makes me roughly 15 years old, and in dire need of seeing this band play live. Which I did @ The Long Beach Auditorium. This set has 43 minutes of video on it, so rush out and buy a copy (CD + DVD), before the aftermarket kicks in.

“Starless and Bible Black” always bothered me a bit, as I knew the title was pinched from a British jazz LP (by Stan Tracey). As above, so below. I was 16 years old.

To conclude this slobbering, “Red” came along before I graduated high school. Alas, Eno fans were primarily responsible for calling this band useless, among other things. It wasn’t useless to me, it sounded powerful etc. What did I know, 16 going 17? Not much. This band was ‘put to bed’ while others watched TV. The “Red” DVD has some fairly nice video on it, too. Buy one CD + DVD quick!

Benign Positional Vertigo

I was suffering (literally!) from Benign Positional Vertigo a very short time ago.  I went to my Dr. and he Rx’d Antivert for me – which I duly took, and the ‘vertigo’ went away – but it left me “zombie-fied” (and all dried out).

If you ever find yourself in this situation – don’t be afraid of it, just get it treated.  I didn’t much care for the effects of the Antivert – it made it so I couldn’t drive my car!  “Do not operate heavy machinery” etc.  I often slept for 9 hours or more, with the Antivert – something I do not usually do!  And when I would awake –sometimes it would take hours to “feel right”, I was so groggy!

Doing better now.
