Lenny Bruce

Happy birthday Lenny Bruce (1925) and Paul Simon (1942 or 1941).

Always did like Lenny Bruce; from when I found out about him until I actually heard him was several years, perhaps 1966 – 1969?  Then the 2LP Bizarre double LP turned up at the hippie record shop, and I was away.  I had managed to get his book, “How To Talk Dirty and Influence People”, which had an enormous effect on me, as a child.  Just a few words into the book, and I didn’t know what he was talking about!  But, I figured it all out, from context, eventually.

I had to buy his older LP’s from a ran-down seedy store on 7th St. in DTLB, “Larry’s”, where the old guy seemed to hate having kids come into his store.  That guy also had the Deram David Bowie LP!  And tons of other stuff my innocent mind wanted.

At first, it was “How many are there?”, later on it was “How many 45’s are there?”  I found an LP: “Why Did Lenny Bruce Die?” (Capitol), which didn’t seem to answer a lot of questions – more like, it created some questions – about which I knew very little!

I knew he was dead, his real name was Leonard Schneider, his mother was still alive, he had been a junkie etc.

Mr. Bruce certainly contributed to my interest in comedy / spoken word LP’s.

Lenny Bruce

Lenny Bruce died today in 1966.  I remember not knowing who he was, once upon a time.  But I quickly found out, probably about the time Frank Zappa released an LP of him, about 1969 or 1970.  I am not an expert on Mr. Bruce, I am just a fan.  His book “How To Talk Dirty and influence People” is a must-read!

I do not automatically buy MSI label stuff, but I saw this in Japan and had to have it.  It didn’t hurt that it had the same number of tracks that the Rhino CD had.  All of these records are very sharp looking and I am so glad I own what I have managed to find – no, I don’t have an LP for “Archaeology”.

And I was pleased to find a Blu-ray disc of both Rutles TV specials.  Never poked around on it however – it may have some bonus material that is good?

I have always liked Neil Innes’ stuff; I got to see him perform live a few years ago @ McCabe’s in Santa Monica.  Real nice guy, he signed everything…

The Smothers Brothers

Happy birthday to EZ singer Jack Jones (1938).

Probably because I could easily see them on TV, and my older brother had all of their LP’s – I got into The Smothers Brothers towards the end of the 1960’s. Yes, the TV show they had hosted some otherworldly amazing artists, such as The Who!

And I got to see them live in Las Vegas in 2002!

As it became time for me to find all of their records, I remembered something my late brother once told me: “Some Smothers Brothers LP’s have more songs than others” – huh? What? But he was right!

The debut album seems to match up, as does the second through the 6th album; for “Mom Always Liked You Best” mono LP has 13 tracks, stereo LP only has 11 tracks. I wonder how that happened?

The Smothers Brothers are not the first artist you think of, regarding 45’s, but I found some of those too!

Firesign Theatre

Happy birthday Chad Stuart (of Chad & Jeremy) (1943). You are officially forgiven if you confuse them with Peter & Gordon.

I first remember Chad & Jeremy for having a hit in the mid-60’s, “Willow Weep For Me”, doubtlessly calculated to cash-in on Beatlemania. I don’t really remember much else, but I knew I had to find the LP “Cabbages & Kings” (on Columbia Records), as that album had The Firesign Theatre on it!

Some (if not all) of them (The Firesign Theatre) are also on “The Astrology Album” (again, Columbia Records). That one is more of a spoken word affair. Or how about Howard Roberts “Antelope Freeway”? A jazz LP named after a phrase The Firesign Theatre used.

And, believe it or not, at least the first two LP’s by The Firesign Theatre were issued in England by CBS Records, in the early 70’s.

The Firesign Theatre could easily keep all of us busy, searching out their 45’s. I’ve got quite a few, but certainly not all of them. And then there’s 45’s by Phil Austin, and Proctor & Bergman! So, any Firesign fanatics out there know if there’s a video for “TV Or Not TV”?

The Firesign Theatre ARE The Beatles of recorded comedy – by that I mean, the currency with which they speak of things resonate deeply in many people. And 2 of them are already dead. So, perhaps you know them another way? Hippie records with opiate jokes! Psychedelic comedy?

I just can’t imagine how the first two LP’s by TFT actually got a release in England. I mean, they didn’t exactly make sense here, much less in stodgy old England (of 1970).

That said, I would really like someone in England to find copies of them for me. As far as collecting TFT, I have a mono “Electrician”, a white label “How Can UBN2”, a promo 45 for “Dwarf”, a promo EP for “Bozos”…and, yes, I do still have my giant LP that I got from KPFK after “The Martian Space Party” (as pictured on the reverse / interior of “Dear Friends”.

No, I don’t have the LP boxed set of “Let’s Eat” – but a thoughtful gift from a good friend provided me with the CD / DVD that has all of them as .wav files – or, thankfully, my computer understands them as .wav files; they are probably stored as MP3’s.

If you have not done so for a while, now is the time to go get your Firesign Theatre LP’s and play them. Now, back to the freeway, which is already in progress…

Barry Humphries

Happy birthday to RuPaul (1960) and Jeff Buckley (1966). I don’t think I have records by either!

I have been collecting Australian satirist Barry Humphries for more than a few years now. As of this writing, he’s still alive. It’s a little unclear about which LP came first in his discography…so, sorry if the beginning of the story is not in proper sequence. Same story for 1972, when his popular feature film was released (“The Adventures of Barry McKenzie”).

Oliver! (UK Original Cast Production) recorded June 30, 1960 with Mr. Humphries playing the part of Mr. Sowerberry, the Undertaker. Released July 1960.

Sandy Agonistes – wherein 4 characters are introduced; recorded in London. Score Records, Australia – presumably about 1960 or so.

A Nice Night’s Entertainment – Dame Edna’s LP debut – approx. 1962, Australian Parlophone LP mono.

Maggie May (UK Original Cast Production) recorded September 22nd, 1964 – Mr. Humphries plays the part of “A Balladeer”. LP liner notes mention “Pre-Beatles”!

Barry Humphries (aka Barry Humphries’ Back) – sources say 1970 for this Parlophone Australia mono LP, but the LP cover indicates one title, at least, is from 1962.

Savoury Dip – Parlophone Australia mono LP – Discogs.net says 1971, though there is no indication on the LP cover. Material covers 1958 – 1971.

Barry Humphries At Carnegie Hall (Philips Australia stereo LP) 1972; one side Dame Edna, one side Sandy Stone.

The Barry Humphries Record of Innocent Austral Verse (Philips Australia stereo LP) 1972; writing credits to ‘Edna May Everage’ and others.

The Adventures of Barry McKenzie (Original Soundtrack UK LP) 1973; music by Peter Best, most lyrics by Barry Humphries.

Bazza McKenzie’s Party Songs (Festival Australia stereo LP) 1972; Mr. Humphries only takes 5 x writing credits on this LP. The man who sings this LP is Barry (Bazza) Crocker.

Housewife Superstar (Charisma Records UK) 1976 – Sir Les Patterson and Dame Edna Everage, recorded July 8th, 1976 in the UK. Liner notes by Sir John Betjeman.

The Sound of Edna (Charisma Records UK) 1978 – the Australian edition had a different cover, but LP is the same. More Edna!

The Last Night Of The Poms (EMI Australia 2LP set) 1981; recorded September 14th and 15th, 1981 in England. More Edna!

12 Inches Of Les – The Album (Towerbell Records UK) 1985; Sir Les Patterson finally gets his own LP! Australian edition on Liberation Records.

Les Patterson Saves The World (Original Soundtrack LP) 1987; WEA Australia, with some very good Tim Finn songs!

The Dame Edna Party Experience (Epic Records UK) 1988 – an album of medleys, sung in the persona of Dame Edna Everage.

Lenny Bruce

Happy birthday to comedian Lenny Bruce (1925), and singer / songwriter Paul Simon (1942).

Lenny Bruce was always an interesting character to me. I am certain I read about him before ever hearing him. And probably, the first thing I ever heard was the 2LP set that Frank Zappa / Bizarre Records issued, about 1970, “The Berkeley Concert”.

Mr. Bruce died in the 60’s, so I cannot say that I remember him from then. The ‘Underground” press of the early 70’s seemed to go on about him…Why did Lenny Bruce die? Etc. I seem to recall the consensus was that the government hounded him to death.

I always found his verbal play interesting. Man, could that guy talk!

Later on, I read about his trouble with drugs; his “estranged” mother etc. But listening to Lenny Bruce never made me want to try (illegal) drugs!

Homer & Jethro

There really wasn’t anything in my book(s) about this date, apart from this being an anniversary of L.S.D. becoming illegal in the U.S. (in 1966).

I’ve had really good luck finding Homer & Jethro 45’s & EP’s lately.

HOMER AND JETHRO – KID THE TOP POPS, RCA US 7″ EP W/PS

HOMER AND JETHRO – ASSAULT THE TOP POPS, RCA US 7″ EP W/PS

HOMER AND JETHRO – WORST OF, RCA US 7″ EP W/PS

HOMER AND JETHRO – LET ME GO BLUBBER, RCA US 7″ EP W/PS

HOMER AND JETHRO – THIS IS A WIFE?, RCA US 7″ EP W/PS

HOMER AND JETHRO – JUST BE HERE , RCA US 7″

HOMER AND JETHRO – OH MY PAPPY, RCA US 7″

HOMER AND JETHRO – HERNANDO’S HIDEAWAY, RCA US 7″

HOMER AND JETHRO – AT THE FLOP, RCA US 7″

HOMER AND JETHRO – EL PASO – NUMERO DOS, RCA US 7″

HOMER AND JETHRO – ARE YOU LONESOME TONIGHT, RCA US 7″

HOMER AND JETHRO – HOUN’ DAWG, RCA US 7″

HOMER AND JETHRO – PLEASE HELP ME I’M FALLING, RCA US 7″

HOMER AND JETHRO – HE’LL HAVE TO GO, RCA US 7″

I found all of the above late last month, the EP’s at Claremont swap meet (50 cents each!) and the 45’s ($3 each) at Buena Park swap meet.

I do not know where I can reference Homer & Jethro information, do you? Where it is, then?

The EP’S are particularly good, seeing as they all have picture sleeves. The 45’s are, alas, just plain old RCA 45 sleeves, not pic sleeves.

There are a lot more 45’s by Homer & Jethro; I do own a few others, too. I just can’t believe I added 14 new Homer & Jethro titles to my collection – recently!
