Miniatures – Various Artists

MINIATURES – Various Artists

https://www.discogs.com/Various-Miniatures-51-Tiny-Masterpieces-Edited-By-Morgan-Fisher/release/1431389

What do you think of some of the artists on this one?  Anybody you like?

I like quite a few of the artists here…Ivor Cutler, Robert Wyatt, Lol Coxhill etc.

Blondie “Greatest Hits: Sound & Vision”

Happy birthday Jim Capaldi (Traffic) (1944) and Ken Hensley (Uriah Heep) (1945).

BLONDIE “Greatest Hits: Sound & Vision” (Capitol Records USA, 2006)

https://www.discogs.com/Blondie-Greatest-Hits/master/124793

The above link should take you to this album on Discogs.  I looked it up, so I wouldn’t have to type everything!

This is really the way to go, if you like some of the songs, but don’t want to own too many Blondie LP’s.  Also included is the novelty “mixage” of Blodie vs. The Doors (“Riders On The Storm” all mushed up).

Birth Control – “Plastic People”

Happy birthday Keith Moon (1947)!

BIRTH CONTROL – “Plastic People” (CBS Germany, 1975)

Initially, I was not too enthusiastic about the German progressive band BIRTH CONTROL.  I did keep the debut album (on Charisma UK LP), but they were soon off my radar.  My thought now as to why I didn’t assign them a higher placing is that they were “a rock band”, and not like CLUSTER or NEU! – ‘motorik musik’.  The CD I have is remastered by Eroc, another German musician.

Somehow, I heard them in 1975, when “Plastic People” came out – perhaps it was the tale end of my late brother sending me airchecked tapes of progressive radio shows?  That seems likely, as nobody here would dare play German bands in 1974/5/6!

“Plastic People” sounded a lot more like what I liked about European music, in general.  The writing / playing was competent, and the songs were good.  The album was recorded at Dieter Dierks studio in Koln, Germany.

If I had to take this album with me, when I croak, I would take only the song “Rockin’ Rollin’ Roller”, a fairly straightforward rock song.  Most everything on this LP is co-written by Zeus B. Held, a famous German keyboard player.  I also like the track “Tiny Flashlights” (guests: Eddie Jobson, then of Roxy Music and Morgan Fisher from Mott The Hoople!  (They also thank Genesis P. Orridge “for breaking his fingernails”.)  Liner notes says it’s their 6th album.

I remember really liking this LP, when it came out.  And it took ages for it to arrive on CD – more than 25 years!

Ryuichi Sakamoto “Futurista”

Happy birthday Roland Orzabal (Tears For Fears) (1961), John Lee Hooker (1917) and Ian Mitchell (Bay City Rollers) (1958).

RYUICHI SAKAMOTO – Futurista (Midi / School, 1986); I never got the paper sleeve SHM-CD version, so I don’t know what’s on that one, but the CD always had 1 more song than the LP, usually the 45 version of “G.T.”, the single from this LP.

This LP has some interesting guests – most notably Kenji Suzuki (the guitarist), New Yorker guitarist Arto Lindsay, and Japanese female vocalist Cano Caoli.  Also guesting is Maceo Parker on sax and vocalist Bernard Fowler (recently seen with The Rolling Stones).  They also thank TRA Project, Bill Laswell and Akiko Yano (Sakamoto’s ex-wife).

“Broadway Boogie Woogie” has more “Bladerunner” (feature film) samples than most music made these days; at least it’s snappy!

Second song doesn’t have any English, but it is pleasant ambient-type “typical” Sakamoto stuff.

“Ballet Mecanique” has some reasonably nice processed vocals from Bernard Fowler.  “G.T. II” is a re-make of “G.T.”, so treat accordingly.

“Milan, 1909” does indeed invoke the thought of Italy many years ago.  “Variety Show” is a computer genius showing off.  “Verso Lo Schermo” features Cano Caoli, the singer of Cioccolata.

“Water IS Life” is the shortest song on this LP @ 1:52.  The album ends with “Parolibre”, again, sung by Cano Caoli – but it always sounded like Miharu Koshi to me (Hosono’s sidekick).  And at least the CD version ends with “G.T.”, the original 45 version, a great song.

The Hacienda etc.

Happy birthday Carl Wayne of The Move (1944)!

I have been reading the book by Peter Hook “The Hacienda – How To Not Run A Club”; here’s a sample month of bookings:

July 1982

Saturday 3rd        FUNKAPOLITAN

Wednesday 7th  LIAISONS DANGEREUSES

Friday 9th             A CERTAIN RATIO

Weds. 14th           ECHO & THE BUNNYMEN

Saturday 17th      SIMPLE MINDS

Monday 19th       BLANCMANGE

Thursday 22nd    THE BIRTHDAY PARTY

Weds 28th            BUZZZ (never heard of ‘em, perhaps a Manchester band?)

Friday 30th           J. WALTER NEGRO & THE LOOSE JOINTZ (never heard of ‘em, perhaps a Manchester band?)

The book is fairly straightforward about how they (New Order) did not know how to run a nightclub.

Of the above bands, I saw A Certain Ratio (about 1984/5 “Club Lingerie”), Simple Minds (at the time of “Sons and Fascination”, “Whisky A Go Go”) and The Birthday Party (at “The Roxy”, within a year of them playing at The Hacienda).  All 3 of those bands were ‘to my taste’, the first two British, The Birthday Party being Australian (a BIG difference!).

Colosseum

Happy birthday Belinda Carlisle (1958)!  (I once went to a party dressed as Belinda Carlisle!)

COLOSSEUM!  I came to Colosseum via Cream.  I met Dick Heckstall-Smith once in London.  New CD versions are coming soon!

The Soft Machine

Happy birthday Chris Curtis (The Searchers) (1941) and Kevin Ayers (The Soft Machine) (1945).

I have rather more LP / CD’s by The Soft Machine than The Searchers, but I will move forward with The Soft Machine, a band that I always ignored once Robert Wyatt left.  In 2016, I rather enjoy some of the non-Robert Wyatt Soft Machine albums!
