Quincy Jones

Happy birthday Michael Bloomfield (1944) and Richard Wright (The Pink Floyd) (1945).  Both are, alas, dead now.  I believe Mr. Bloomfield to be a very interesting character; one can’t help but feel sympathy towards Mr. Richard Wright of The Pink Floyd.  It’s like he didn’t finish up with the rest of them.

QUINCY JONES

Yes, he produced Michael Jackson.  No, I don’t remember him ever being on Reprise Records, but there it is.  Mostly his stuff is on A&M Records, and Verve before / after that.  I remember “Walking In Space” is  somewhat funky.

Bryan Ferry

Happy birthday Homer (Homer & Jethro)(1920), Paul Cook (Sex Pistols) (1956) and Bobbie Gentry (“Ode To Billie Joe”) (1944).

BRYAN FERRY

I’ve known who / what Bryan Ferry is since 1972, when I tried the debut LP by Roxy Music.  I do not remember what I was expecting, but I had read about them (in the UK press).  I bought the LP @ Mundae Records, on the pier, in Belmont Shore, probably for $5 (or a penny less).  At any rate, I did not remain a Roxy Music fan for very long – my limited attention span notwithstanding.  And I did not initially go for Bryan Ferry solo records – at all.  It wasn’t until he started doing re-makes of Roxy Music songs that I actually liked that I bought anything of his solo career.

MUTE BEAT

Japanese dub reggae!  I saw them live, long ago – in Santa Monica, CA!  I have never looked them up, when I visit Tokyo, Japan.  Kazufumi Kodama is the main guy.  I believe the bass player passed away a while ago.  I remember getting the cassette of “No. 0” before there were any CD’s released, courtesy of the TRA Project.  No, I don’t have “everything” by them…

Burnin Red Ivanhoe

Happy birthday Kim Fowley (1944) and Cat Stevens (1947).

A friend recently mentioned the Danish group BURNIN’ RED IVANHOE.  To be honest, I hadn’t even tried to listen to them in about 30 years!  I have what I believe are their first two LP’s, both British pressings.

  1. BURNIN’ RED IVANHOE (Warner WS 3013) 1970
  2. W.W. (Dandelion / Polydor 2310 145 SUPER) 1971

I correctly remembered that the first album was somewhat ordinary “rock band” – and the 2nd album was a bit more “progressive”.  But “W.W.W.” was really quite good!  I suppose it shouldn’t be such a shock that a 1971 LP had sufficient “prog chops” to be fairly likable.   After all, that was the ‘style’ of the day!

The debut album is produced by Tony Reeves – is that the Colosseum guy?  Or someone else?  From the sleeve of the debut album, I additionally recognize the name “Karsten Vogel”, but none of the others.  Interesting that they recorded in England!

“W.W.W.” is recorded in Denmark; producer / engineer Freddy Hansson – could this be Freddy Hasson?  The guy who worked with C.M.U.?  Perhaps he would change his name so he wasn’t mistaken for being the brother of Bo Hansson?

So, Burnin’ Red Ivanhoe does seem to have a few connections to British progressive rock ‘royalty’ – that is, providing Tony Reeves is the guy from Colosseum and Freddy Hansson is the guy from C.M.U.!

Once Upon A Time – Jazz – Bossa Nova

Happy birthday John Lodge (Moody Blues) (1945) and Carlos Santana (1947).

A few years ago, I bought some really inexpensive CD’s from Japan, called “Once Upon A Time”, the one we will look at today is “Jazz – Bossa Nova”

  1. STAN GETZ / JOAO GILBERTO –The Girl From Ipanema
  2. ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIM – Wave
  3. ASTRUD GILBERTO – Agua De Beber
  4. WALTER WANDERLEY – Summer Samba
  5. ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIM – Desafinado
  6. ANTONIO CARLOS JOBIM – Samba De Uma Nota So
  7. ASTRUD GILBERTO – Tristeza
  8. STAN GETZ / JOAO GILBERTO – So Danco Samba
  9. MARCOS VALLE – The Answer
  10. ASTRUD GILBERTO – Meditation

This really boils it down, doesn’t it?  And definitely some non-hit material here, too.

Happy birthday Screaming Jay Hawkins (1929) and Brian Auger (1939).

Soul Jazz Records (UK)

I first became aware of Soul Jazz Records in England when they decided to re-issue records by A Certain Ratio, such as “The Graveyard & The Ballroom”, which had never been an LP before!

Did you know they also issue fantastic compilations?  I got one a while back called “New Orleans Funk”, 24 tracks – huge booklet etc.  Full title: “New Orleans: The Original Sound of Funk 1960 – 1975”.

It has bands / artists like The Meters, Eddie Bo, Professor Longhair, The Wild Magnolias, Huey “Piano” Smith, Dr. John, Lee Dorsey, Mary Jane Hooper, Allen Toussaint, The Explosions, The Gators etc.

WOW, this is more funky stuff than I have previously had!  Whole CD is 24 tracks of PURE unadulterated NEW ORLEANS FUNK!

Simply put, this is a collection for dancing!

Arlo Guthrie

Happy birthday Woody Guthrie (1912)

ARLO GUTHRIE is probably most famous for “Alice’s Restaurant”, both the LP & the feature film (though I must confess, it’s been a few years since I’ve seen the feature film).
