The Ron Kane Files #1

By 1976, I was busily chasing European music, trying to “fill in” my collection with Can LP’s etc.  I was particularly fond of French music, notably Lard Free.  We were also trying to figure out who to get to be in our band (our first LP was released in 1978).

Summer of 1976 brought my first record store job – Bellflower, CA.  I was regularly going to record collector swap meets and as many record stores as I could find!  I had yet to develop my theory of “There are records anywhere there are lots of people” – in 1976, it was “go wherever there are colleges, and there will be record stores”, which was true back then.  That theory worked for some California locations, such as Berkeley, CA, Orange, CA – there were so many record stores in California!

Truth is, once I started working full-time, I could only go to record stores when I wasn’t working.  I was always in search of “imported” LP’s, which were not absolutely everywhere.

After a few years of working in a record store, it became obvious that I needed to go to Europe, in search of further European music.  So, in the fall of 1979, with some advice from record collector friends, I went to London, England without a hotel reservation.

Very intoxicating for a 21 year old record collector to go to the U.K. for the first time!  Who could be bothered with reservations?  The first place I went to didn’t have anyplace for me, but – they kindly directed me to somewhere that did have a reasonable place to stay, Goldhawk Road area.  I knew absolutely nothing about the size / scope of London.  I only knew Los Angeles and San Francisco!

I easily figured out the tube / trains; I picked up my mail at the American Express office in the Haymarket!  I didn’t care much for the food / drink in London.  I got to France easily, and the food improved!

Arriving in Paris, I looked up as many musician’s names as I could in the phone book, mostly leaving messages; some had to be called a few times.  I did successfully reach a few people:  Gilles Yepremian and Roland Bocquet!  Gilles Y managed Lard Free / Urban Sax – Lard Free had been my favorite band for several years.  Roland Bocquet had been in the band Catharsis and I loved his recent album, “Paradia”.

When I went to Germany, I looked up Holger Czukay of Can – in the phone book.  He picked me up at the Koln train station in his Volkswagen!

Sweden and Finland were a bit more problematic, as I couldn’t find any names I knew in the telephone books I could find.  What do they even call record stores in Sweden?  How do I look it up?

I caught the boat to Helsinki in Stockholm, and stayed at a glorious hotel that I spotted, “Hotel Helsinki” in that fall of 1979.

Venice, Italy!  I had an intro to Aldo Tagliapietra of Le Orme and he directed me to a tiny place in Mestre, just outside of Venice.  He was super nice to me and spoke perfect English.  He put me onto Ronnie Thorpe, in Milan.

NC 45’s

Happy birthday to Phil Shulman (of Gentle Giant) (1937), and Simon Kirke (of Bad Company) (1949)

I had the good fortune to visit the state of North Carolina last week. I also met up with Jim Donato, The Post Punk Monk. https://postpunkmonk.wordpress.com/ Together, we ‘did’ most of the record stores we could find in Charlotte, NC. The Big Winner was “Repo Records”, who appeared to be fairly well-organized, had good lighting (“Lunchbox Records” lighting was not in evidence), and stuff I wanted! Also went to “Wax Museum” with Sir Jim, they seemed to favor filing cabinets for 45’s. The big draw to Charlotte? Manifest, a store that was once ostensibly a Warehouse / Second Spin, where (because I was late to the game) Jim shopped, but I didn’t.

So what you get TODAY is a detailing of today is the total sum of 45’s I turned up in both Raleigh and Charlotte, NC.

Pink Floyd

Supposedly today is the day that “Ca Plane Pour Moi” by Plastic Bertrand was originally released, long ago…1978!

I read that Pink Floyd has officially broken up. While I am not the biggest fan of any Pink Floyd works after Syd Barrett left, I do acknowledge they knew what they were doing, in most instances. I saw them live after “A Momentary Lapse of Reason” and they were good. I saw “The Wall” at L.A. Sports Arena in 1980. I own both the 5.1 “Dark Side Of The Moon” SA-CD and the “Wish You Were Here” 5.1 SA-CD. Short of them generating a 5.1 SA-CD of “The Wall” (which one suspects they could easily come up with), what else am I a ‘target market’ for, Pink Floyd-wise?

What should take care of most any Pink Floyd fan:

“Discovery” CD boxed set, Capitol / EMI 82613.2

  1. Piper At The Gates Of Dawn (stereo 2011 CD)
  2. A Saucerful Of Secrets (stereo 2011 CD)
  3. More O.S.T. (stereo 2011 CD)
  4. Ummagumma (stereo 2011 2CD)
  5. Atom Heart Mother (stereo 2011 CD)
  6. Meddle (stereo 2011 CD)
  7. Obscured By Clouds O.S.T. (stereo 2011 CD)
  8. Dark Side Of The Moon (stereo 2011 CD)
  9. Wish You Were Here (stereo 2011 CD)
  10. Animals (stereo 2011 CD)
  11. The Wall (stereo 2011 2CD)
  12. The Final Cut (stereo 2011 CD)
  13. A Momentary Lapse Of Reason (stereo 2011 CD)
  14. The Division Bell (stereo 2011 CD)

Beautiful packaging designed mostly by Storm Studios (the late Storm Thorgerson). “Graphic Tales” book accompanies the CD boxed set. Unless you want / need 5.1 versions of DTOSM or WYWH, this CD boxed set does the job, apart from the latter day release, “The Endless River” (yet another 5.1 mix, too).

They could re-issue the rest of their singles; probably mix everything to 5.1 after “Ummagumma”; make 12” re-issue singles of their previous 7” singles; expanded packaging LP re-issues; I doubt they would offer us anything “previously unreleased”.

I do hope the “Discovery” CD boxed set is the final release of their albums on CD – but you never know. Were Pink Floyd one of the groups that ended up at Universal or Warner / Rhino?

Weather Report

Happy birthday to Wayne Shorter (of Weather Report) (1933)!

I only started doing the fusion jazz ‘thing’ this year, so my collection is not huge…yet. I do have some desirable Weather Report pieces, however – like the ”Heavy Weather” SA-CD, which, to my knowledge, hasn’t been re-issued yet in Japan!

The Move

Happy birthday to Carl Wayne (of The Move) (1944).

The Move were always one of those groups that everybody seemed to have a good opinion of. The first LP I remember hearing was “Looking On”, in 1970. Roy Wood had a massive career with Wizzard, Wizzard’s Brew etc. Jeff Lynne chugged right along with The Idle Race and Electric Light Orchestra. But let’s look at what I kept by The Move. No, I don’t have an extensive collection!
