Benign Positional Vertigo

I was suffering (literally!) from Benign Positional Vertigo a very short time ago.  I went to my Dr. and he Rx’d Antivert for me – which I duly took, and the ‘vertigo’ went away – but it left me “zombie-fied” (and all dried out).

If you ever find yourself in this situation – don’t be afraid of it, just get it treated.  I didn’t much care for the effects of the Antivert – it made it so I couldn’t drive my car!  “Do not operate heavy machinery” etc.  I often slept for 9 hours or more, with the Antivert – something I do not usually do!  And when I would awake –sometimes it would take hours to “feel right”, I was so groggy!

Doing better now.

Smash Hits, Vol. 2, No. 24 (November 27 – December 10, 1980)

SH 801127

Toyah Wilcox on the cover, Madness on the reverse.  Spandau Ballet “To Cut A Long Story Short” lyrics.  The Revillos are the special guests of Gary Glitter at his “Glitter Over Christmas” show at London’s Rainbow Theatre on December 20thHugh Cornwell writes a book about being jailed for drugs.  The Human League add girls to their group.  Kate Bush’s All Time Top 10 includes a Frank Zappa record! (“Overnite Sensation”).  Full page advertisement for Hazel O’Connor (“Sons and Lovers” on Albion).  Full page advertisement for Boomtown Rats “Banana Republic” 45.  UB40 in the centerfold.  Motorhead in colour.  A small B&W photo of The Monochrome Set (in the “Letters” section)!

45’s:

  • Cabaret Voltaire – Seconds Too Late (Rough Trade)
  • Stranglers – Tomorrow Was The Hereafter (SIS)
  • Jona Lewie – Stop The Cavalry (Stiff)
  • Theatre Of Hate – Original Sin (SS)
  • Bow Wow Wow – Your Cassette Pet (EMI) cassette-only release

LP’s:

  • V.A. – From Brussels With Love (Crepuscule) incl. A Certain Ratio, John Foxx etc.
  • John Lennon / Yoko Ono – Double Fantasy (Geffen)
  • M (Robin Scott) – The Official Secrets Act (MCA)
  • Rod Stewart – Foolish Behaviour (Riva)
  • Blondie – Autoamerican (Chrysalis)

Gigs:

Motorhead, Yes, Hazel O’Connor, Adam & The Ants, Comsat Angels, Sad Café, Ian Dury & The Blockheads, Japan, Split Enz, Rod Stewart, Gary Glitter, The Damned, The Skids, Hot Chocolate, Revillos, Human League, Ultravox (minus John Foxx), Queen, Magazine, XTC

I actually like “Foolish Behaviour” by Rod Stewart!  Took 30 years for me to dig the M (Robin Scott) album; Stranglers 45 was mail-order, I believe; Didn’t hear Jona Lewie for another 30 years; I remember being asked if we wanted cassettes by the exporter, because of the Bow Wow Wow title; by the fall of 1980 – the many voices in New Zealand were calling my name.  I would go there for the first time (of 7 trips) at the very end of 1980.  Maybe when I run out of Smash Hits, I should detail Rip It Up?  –  That time may be closer than suspected!

Robert Wyatt: The Last 20 years or so…

I’ve been following Mr. Wyatt for some time now.  His solo works are of interest to me.  Thankfully, he’s still with us.  It’s nice that Domino Records seem to be carrying on with their re-issues of his work.  Long live Robert Wyatt!

Not familiar with this stuff?  Mr. Hopper more or less originated the fuzz bass sound used in a lot of rock music; yet at the time, it was lumped in under “jazz”, in England.  Mr. Hopper was an inventive writer and player, and I was very sorry to lose him so soon:

Suffer The Children

Earlier this month, I went on another trip to San Diego, CA.  It’s fairly easy to do, with San Diego being only about 100 miles away, south of where I live.  There are numerous record stores down there – and along the way there:  Lou’s in Encinitas, Folk Arts on Adams in Normal Heights, Off The Record on University in North Park etc.  And those Thrift Trader stores!  You never know what you’ll find in those places!  And, yes – there are newer record stores, too!

We also enjoy eating and drinking in San Diego – something for every palate!  My guess is that the San Diego beer scene rivals even Portland, OR!  Polite Provisions!  Craft & Commerce!  Ritual Tavern!  Eclipse Chocolate!  Hamilton’s!  Pizza Port!  …and almost countless breweries!  Helm’s, Hess (North Park), Thorn Street Brewery, Societe, Ballast Point, Coronado Brewing Company, Stone etc.

SHM-SA-CD

http://www.universal-music.co.jp/international/sacd/?productPage=0

Universal Japan is releasing more SHM-SA-CD’s!  They’d all but stopped a year ago or so – so I am delighted to see this happening!

These are “Single Layer” editions, so you will need to have an SA-CD player to play them; most all of the US SA-CD’s (being done by Mobile Fidelity, for example) are all ”Hybrid” discs, which will play on both CD players and SA-CD players.  These are not “hybrid”!

I already bought some of these non-hybrid SHM-SA-CD’s from Universal Japan – British artists, with “Master Tape” sound:
