Mark Mothersbaugh

On 10/31/70, the LP “Led Zeppelin III” charted at No. 1 in the US.  Kinky Friedman born, 1944.

I was never your biggest Devo fan – never saw ‘em live – though I did speak to Mark Mothersbaugh about Hajime Tachibana!  I can listen and enjoy in 2013.

On 10/30/65 The Rolling Stones 45 “Get Off Of My Cloud” charts at No. 1 in England.  On 10/30/71 the LP “Imagine” by John Lennon charts at No. 1 in the US.  Grace Slick born, 1939.

David Sylvian of Japan on the cover, O.M.D. on the reverse.  Lyrics for XTC “Towers Of London”.  Full page advertisement for O.M.D. “Organization” (“Includes limited edition free EP!”).  Japan article – a little too late?  Nice Mick Karn B&W photo.  Full page advertisement for U2 “Boy” LP.  Full page advertisement for David Bowie ”Fashion” 45.  Virgin Records to release a cheap compilation LP, “Cash Cows” for 1.15 UK pounds; a different Virgin compilation, “Machines” retails for 3.99 UK pounds.  Debut Spandau Ballet 45.  Hazel O’Connor in colour ( + article).  Full page advertisement for Thin Lizzy “Chinatown” LP.  Status Quo centerfold.  Stranglers lyrics for “No More Heroes”.  Adam Ant: “Anti-Hero”.  Lyrics for David Bowie “Fashion”.

  • Vivian Stanshall – Terry Keeps His Clips On (Charisma)
  • The Books – Expertise (Logo)
  • The Colonel (Colin Moulding) – Too Many Cooks In The Kitchen (Virgin) solo XTC
  • Psychedelic Furs – Mr. Jones (CBS)
  • Pauline Murray & The Invisible Girls (Illusive)
  • Medium Medium – So Hungry, So Angry (Cherry Red)

  • The Monochrome Set – Love Zombies (Dindisc)
  • Colin Newman – A-Z (Beggar’s Banquet)
  • O.M.D. – Organization (Dindisc)
  • Talking Heads – Remain In Light (Sire)
  • V.A. – Wanna Buy A Bridge? (Rough Trade) with Spizzenergi, Delta 5 etc.

As stated previously, I am tired of detailing the gigs – to little or no effect.  This issue: Tangerine Dream, Motorhead, Buzzcocks, Simple Minds, B.A. Robertson, AC / DC, Comsat Angels, O.M.D., Sad Café, Robert Palmer, Adam & The Ants etc.

The 45 by The Books was the only thing I ever saw by them, and I remember this song, “Expertise” as being particularly good!  Yes to Vivian Stanshall!  Yes to Colin Moulding!  Probably my favorite Psychedelic Furs 45 (it’s a different version to what turned up later on an LP!); Decent Pauline Murray 45; great Medium Medium 45;  Ooh, do I try the 2nd Monochrome Set LP?  Colin Newman from Wire…liked the first OMD album better; Did not care about Talking Heads at all; I remember this Rough Trade sampler LP, but I don’t remember it having Spizzenergi on it…I really liked their 45 “Soldier Soldier”!

The Monkees

Randy Newman born, 1943.

When I started this music blog in 2002, I wrote dismissively about The Monkees.  Perhaps I wasn’t the right age for the TV show?  Or there was the “crush” of discovering at a young age that they didn’t play on their records?

I like them much better now, but they are still not one of my favorite bands.  I do like their singles.  For ages, all I owned was the O.S.T. for their film, “Head” – now that’s got some snappy song on it!  Will a 20 track “Greatest Hits” CD take care of my 2013 needs?  Sorry, no use for the extended packaging of the latter day albums by Rhino Handmade.

Sunday night

As soon as my friend Gary Steel went back to New Zealand, Lou Reed died.  I wasn’t a huge fan, but I always feel bad when a musician that makes people happy dies.

Gary came up to see the Frank Zappa “200 Motels” show with me, at the Disney Hall in DTLA.  It was a good show, and we quoted stuff from it to each other, for a few days afterwards.  Broth….the girl wants to fix him some broth.

Argued with Dorothy for a while this AM – nothing resolved.

Soon to visit:  Ventura, CA – San Diego, CA

My first LP was “Nashville Zodiac”, and I never looked back.  There are some LP’s that I do not believe I have, on the Monitor label – yikes!  He also wrote for Kenny Rogers.

Don Bowman

Don Bowman

Johnny Carson born, 1925.

Don Bowman!  My favorite country & western comedian!  “Hello DJ” was my introduction!  Don has written songs for Bobby Bare and he has worked for Waylon Jennings.  He even has 2 x crap 60’s movies, “Las Vegas Hillbillies” and “Hillbillies in a Haunted House” or thereabouts!  When I first got “Hello DJ”, I had no real idea that he had a long, illustrious career on RCA Records.  As far as I know, none of this stuff ever made it to CD – unless it was something sold in the lobby someplace in Branson, MO.

Wikipedia says he died in 2013:

Leslie West (of Mountain) born, 1945.  Timothy Leary born, 1920.

Wayne Cochran & the C.C. Riders, an indelible image forever burned into one’s consciousness!  Hot soul music played by a bunch of white guys.  Alas, Wayne & Co. are not overly cared for in the digital domain, but that’s OK.  At least he’s still alive!

On 10/21/61 the Ray Charles 45 “Hit The Road Jack” charts at No. 6 in England.  On 10/21/65 the Yardbirds 45 “Still I’m Sad” charts at No. 3 in England.  On 10/21/67 the Foundations 45 “Baby Now That I’ve Found You “charts at No. 1 in England.  On 10/21/72, the original soundtrack LP for “Superfly” by Curtis Mayfield charts at No. 1 in the US.  Also on 10/21/72 the Family 45 “Burlesque” charts at No. 13 in England.  Manfred Mann born, 1941 – he’s South African!

Sue Thompson is one of the artists that I seemed to have little say in whether or not I collected her.  As a child, upon inheriting a box of 45’s from my older sisters, there was a Hickory Records Sue Thompson 45 for “Norman” in there.  Took a few years, but I eventually found the debut album on Hickory (as an HMV copy!), liked it real well…and I began to wonder what else there was.  Not much is actually on CD as yet, but…  or
