I was forwarded this article by a friend, I read it and thought it was reasonably interesting.  I like that the guy refers to his record collecting as his “Life’s Work”.  Perhaps I should do that, too?

Progressive rock on Audiophile Formats

2013 SHM-CD Toshiba / Virgin Japan

On 7/25/64, the original soundtrack LP “A Hard Day’s Night” by The Beatles charted at No. 1 in the US.  On 7/27/68 the Tom Jones 45 “Help Yourself” charts at No. 3 in England.

SA-CD

There is scheduled to be an SA-CD boxed set of the Atlantic Records works of Yes released in Japan this coming September.  At over $400, this will take some consideration; be advised that I am an advocate of the SA-CD format.  Will it mean I can get rid of all of my other Yes CD’s, SA-CD’s and DVD-A’s?

A while back, I sought out an SA-CD boxed set from England for the Charisma Records works of Genesis (their ‘first’ box, 1970 – 1975), their first 5 Charisma albums and a bonus disc.  I got rid of all of my regular Genesis CD’s – but none of the 45’s or LP’s.  Why?  They are extremely nice ‘packages’ – a pleasure to view.  In fact, I just got Toshiba / Virgin / Charisma kami (paper) sleeves for “Foxtrot” and “Selling England By The Pound” – as the packaging in the SA-CD boxed set left a bit to be desired.

And the best work of The Moody Blues is entirely available as SA-CD’s – again, no boxed set – that I am aware of.

DVD-A

Mainstream progressive rock is particularly taken care of, in the “high end audio” universe – all of the ‘good’ King Crimson albums have CD + DVD-A packages (and no boxed set?);  There’s no good boxed set available for Jethro Tull, either.  There are “nice” versions of “Aqualung” and “Thick As A Brick” available, but it takes the Japanese to come up with the really aesthetically pleasing packaging of the early Jethro Tull albums.  So, I did keep my Toshiba / Chrysalis kami (paper) sleeve CD’s – despite having “Deluxe” packages for “Aqualung” etc.

There are a few other “Deluxe” packages as CD + DVD-A that I enjoy – of particular note is Caravan’s “In The Land of Grey & Pink” – probably the most obscure title available in 5.1 audio!  As of this writing, my 5.1 version of Quatermass has yet to arrive from England, so the previous sentence still holds true – at this time.

And I have yet to see the deluxe versions of Gentle Giant albums, re-mixed to 5.1 – but likely I’ll be buying those ones for the first time, as I stopped with “In A Glass House” at the time.  I can hear it now, but not at the time.  They seemed so mainstream!

So, bring on the less-mainstream UK 70’s progressive rock in audiophile formats!  How about an Arthur Brown’s Kingdom Come SA-CD boxed set?

Smash Hits (Vol. 2 No. 15) July 24 – August 6th, 1980

Smash Hits 1980.07.24

On 7/24/60 the Rolf Harris 45 “Tie Me Kangaroo Down Sport” is No. 9 in England.

Not 100% sure who is actually on this cover.  Splodgenessabounds and The Mo-Dettes?  And The Korgis?  Or just Splodgenessabounds?  (Note:  I do not believe I ever actually even heard a Splodgenessabounds record.)

Dexy’s Midnight Runners have a full page advertisement with a boatload of text in it.  Was it paid for by EMI?  Or is the inside front cover a piece by a Smash Hits writer?  Oh, Dexy’s has decided to not do anymore interviews.  Nice B&W photo of Kate Bush holding a bass guitar (“Babooshka”).  A ½ page ad for a band called Tour De Force – all girls!  Big Mo-Dettes feature (& colour pic).  Malcolm McLaren announces Bow Bow Wow’s “C-30 C-60 C-90 Go!”.   Mari Wilson:  “The sound of Young Wembley”!  Malcolm Owen of The Ruts cashes in his heroin chips.  David Bowie “Scary Monsters” LP is announced (Sept. 12 release date).  Peter Gabriel in the centerfold.  “Toyah Competition”!  Photo & lyrics for “Sanctuary” by New MusikThe Lambrettas in colour!

45’s:

  • Magazine “Sweetheart Contract’ (Virgin Records)
  • Grace Jones “Private Life” (Island Records) also as a 12” single
  • Jona Lewie “Big Shot – Momentarily” (Stuiff Records) 6” and 7”
  • Pauline Murray & The Invisible Girls “Dream Sequence” (Illusive Records)
  • Telex “We Are Getting Old” (Sire Records)

LP’s:

  • The Silicon Teens “Music For Parties” (Mute Records)
  • Athletico Spizz 80 “Do A Runner” (A&M Records)
  • Clive Langer & The Boxes “Splash” (F-Beat Records)
  • Dexy’s Midnight Runners “Searching For The Young Soul Rebels” Late Night Feelings (EMI) Records

Great Magazine 45 (on the album, actually); nice to see the 12” single market hotting up with a dandy Grace Jones 12” with a picture sleeve.  How confusing for there to be both a 6” and 7” version of a good Jona Lewie 45.  Pauline Murray had been the vocalist of punk band Penetration, the Invisible Girls had worked with John Cooper Clarke, so this one was a no-brainer.  I love Telex to pieces in 2013, didn’t quite know what to make of ‘em in 1980.

Mute Records continues on their Depeche Mode pathway with Silicon Teens.  I had the Rough Trade Spizz singles, so their major label debut album was eagerly anticipated; great album “Do A Runner”.  Didn’t get the Clive Langer LP then, but I have it now (ex-Deaf School).  My GF of many years has a soft spot for Dexy’s of yore – this album in particular.

Now preparing the clown suits for the forthcoming 45 release of “Ashes To Ashes” by David Bowie.

Time Machine – June, 1973

August 2013 issue

August 2013 issue

This list is from Strange Days magazine in Japan, highlighting the releases of June, 1973 (August 2013 issue with Matching Mole on the cover!)

  • Manfred Mann’s Earth Band – Messin’ (Vertigo UK LP 6360 087)
  • Savoy Brown – Jack The Toad (Decca UK LP TXS 112)
  • Carole King – Fantasy (Ode US LP SP 77018)
  • Harry Nilsson – A Little Touch of Schmilsson In The Night (RCA UK LP SF 8371)
  • Roger McGuinn – Roger McGuinn (Columbia US LP KC 31946)
  • Budgie – Never Turn You Back On A Friend (MCA UK LP MDKS 8010)
  • O.S.T. – Jesus Christ Superstar (MCA UK 2LP MCX 502)
  • Partridge Family – Crossword Puzzle (Bell UK LP BELL 1122)
  • The Osmonds – The Plan (MGM US LP SE 4903)

Ah, yes – the releases of 40 years ago!  I think I only own the Harry Nilsson LP today – and an English copy to boot!  No go on the Manfred Mann, Savoy Brown, Carole King, Roger McGuinn, Budgie, J.C. Superstar O.S.T., Partridge Family and The Osmonds.  Never have I had so few releases from Strange Days magazine, for the Time Machine!

Never quite cottoned on to the latter day Manfred Mann releases, though I am trying.  I keep Savoy Brown in the 60’s, mostly; I always buy their 45’s – when I see them!  After “Tapestry”, I can stick with Carole King “Best of” albums, I think.  Never a huge Byrds fan, and this extended to Roger / Jim McGuinn solo works.  I do like Budgie, but mostly A&M material, not MCA material.  I liked the original JC Superstar 2LP set, but never even heard the O.S.T.!  I do not own any Partridge Family material, alas; no go on The Osmonds non-GH titles.

Today, I am even posting the cover of Strange Days – so you can understand why I like this magazine.  I hope they get better titles for the next Time Machine!

So, have I got all of the “major works” of post-E.L.O. 70’s Roy Wood?   Or am I missing something?  The Japanese CD’s are new-to-me and really good.  I did not grow up with this stuff, but came to it more recently.

Grace Jones “Nightclubbing”

Grace Jones Nightclubbing label

On 7/21/61 the John Leyton 45 “Johnny Remember Me” (produced by Joe Meek) charts at No. 1 in England.  On 7/21/62 the Bernard Cribbins 45 “Right Said Fred” charts at No. 10 in England.  On 7/18/64 The Beatles 45 “A Hard Day’s Night” charts at No. 1 in England.  On 7/19/69 the John Lennon / Plastic Ono Band 45 “Give Peace A Chance” charts at No. 2 in England.  On 7/21/79, the LP “Replicas” by Tubeway Army was No. 1 in England.

It will be no surprise that I am a huge Grace Jones fan, especially of her 1981 album “Nightclubbing”; an album where genre and gender collide.  I like the albums that came both before and after it, but “Nightclubbing” is the one.  Here’s a decent cross-section of Island Records works from the 80’s by Grace Jones:

I do like her initial works for Manhattan Records, “Inside Story” and “Bulletproof Heart” – but her Island Records releases are the main course.  It’s through these records that I got onto the Wally Badarou bandwagon!

And definitely do not miss her 2008 album “Hurricane” (and it’s US 2CD version from 2011) – I saw her tour for this album – she was and is wonderful!

Brand X

Brand X Jpn label

On 7/17/65 Peter Cook & Dudley Moore 45 “Good-bye” charted at No. 18 in England.  On 7/17/71, “In My Own Time” 45 by Family charted in England at No. 4.

At the time of their release, Brand X records did not interest me much.  To be honest, I’d had a snootful of Genesis (and Genesis fans). So the side projects in 1976 / 7 were not “of interest”.  In 2013, I like ‘em just fine, as I can see it as “British jazz” of a style that I am OK with.  No, I am not a completist, though Charisma collectors will not have an easy time finding everything as 1st generation UK pressings.

I think I got started buying Brand X records when I began finding original Charisma UK pressings in used LP bins, here in California.  I recently got a Japanese pressing of “Unorthodox Behavior” in Portland, OR – which sounds amazing (a combination of decent quiet pressing and the Japanese predilection towards mastering LP’s).

Yes, I’ll buy US Caroline pressed US CD’s when I find them inexpensively, in the used bin.  I was very pleased to find a clean 12” of “Soho” – it has a great cover, and very good sound – being a 12” record at 45rpm.
